‘The excitement and danger of aerial combat drew the author to war long before the United States joined in 1917. Determined to fly, he eventually found himself soaring over France in a SPAD aircraft, with explosions bursting below him. He recounts his experiences in a straightforward and compelling way. He experienced his moment of glory in the skies—but like many pilots, it was short-lived. Shot down behind German lines near St. Mihiel during heavy fighting, he crashed to the ground and was captured. For the remainder of the war, he endured the harsh reality of imprisonment, living through the deep suffering and deprivation of captivity’. In scarce Paul Nash dust-wrapper. 22cm x 14cm. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in silver. Condition: Complete example of this rare Nash dust-jacket, with light edge wear, minor chipping, and even age toning. Some faint spotting is present to verso, along with two small tape repairs. There is a light crease to the rear flap and a small worn area on the front flap. Nash’s design remains visually strong and vibrant.
